EC Rejects AP GOVT’s Plea To Reduce Tax On Petrol

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is said to have flatly rejected the Andhra Pradesh government's plea to permit it to reduce sales tax on petrol by three per cent to "provide relief to people in view of the recent price hike."

With a clear eye on the June 12 by-elections, state Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed officials of the Commercial Taxes (CT) Department to obtain permission from the ECI to "review the tax structure on petrol" so as to bring down the price by Rs. 1.80 per litre in the state.

A private company will launch a rocket to the International Space Station, sending it on a grocery run this weekend that could be the shape of things to come for America's space program.

Samsung recently overtook Nokia as the number one smartphone maker in the world (unit sales). But there seem to be no signs as slowing down - they just announced an all-new flagship Galaxy smartphone - Galaxy SIII.

The previous flagship, Galaxy SII, has a 4.3-inch screen. The SIII, with 4.8-inch screen, is not much larger or heavier because of the narrower bezel and innovative weight reduction technologies. It is an unbelievable 8.6 mm thick and weighs just 133 grams. The more rounded shape and premium finish (in pebble blue or marble white) is inspired by nature.

The phone runs on Google's Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) software OS, but has a number of Samsung additions – including voice recognition and eye tracking.

Mumbai, May 1 As Maharashtra turned 52 Tuesday, the government said it would provide low-cost housing to mill workers and free houses to kin of mill workers who died during struggle for a state for Marathi-speaking people.

The government has decided to provide 6,948 houses to mill workers at reduced and affordable rates, at Rs.7,50,000 in multi-storeyed buildings. The government will also give free houses to the survivors of the mill workers who lost their lives in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement,Governor K. Sankaranarayanan said at a function held to mark the states 52nd anniversary here.

Maharashtra's 52nd anniversary coincides with the birth centenary of the state's first chief minister Y. B. Chavan and the International Labour Day or May Day.
