Tsunami : Indonasia 8.7 Magnitude Earth Quake Warnings In Jakarta Asia News,

The quake struck 431 kilometers (268 miles) off the coast of Aceh, one of Indonesia’s poorest provinces where 170,000 people died or went missing in an Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. India’s tsunami center warned of waves in the Andaman islands and the Malaysian Meteorological Department advised people in Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Langkawi and Perak to stay away from the coastline.

Buildings in neighboring Singapore shook after the quake, which was initially measured at a magnitude of 8.9. Tremors were felt as far as Ho Chi Minh City, said Le Huy Minh, the head of earthquake and tsunami monitoring at Vietnam’s Institute of Geophysics, and in India. Chennai Port Trust asked ships to go out to sea until 6 p.m. local time as a precaution after the earthquake and tsunami warning, Deputy Chairman P.C. Parida said in a telephone interview.

The epicenter was 963 kilometers west of Kuala Lumpur and 1,797 kilometers west northwest of Jakarta, the USGS said.

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.5 hit waters 308 miles (495 kilometers) off Banda Aceh Wednesday afternoon, causing a tsunami warning to be issued for much of the Indian Ocean.

But the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that the earthquake was not as likely to produce a tsunami as past quakes.

Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning for Aceh, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, Lampung and Bengkulu immediately after the quake was reported.

“There is potential for a tsunami to hit five provinces in the region — Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu and Lampung,”  Marzuki, an analyst at the BMKG, told Agence France-Presse.
